Traffic Congestion At Goods Shed

Sir, —Can the Railways Department find no solution to the traffic congestion in B shed? The tangle and turmoil of all sorts and sizes of vehicles,- from giant articulated trucks which, backed in at right-angles, almost completely block the flow of traffic to small trucks and vans, has to be seen to be believed. At this time of year, particularly, the confusion is heightened by the addition of . many vehicles bringing produce to rail for southern markets. Requests for week-day loading of this produce outside B shed (as on Sundays) have been rejected. Why? Might some shunters be involved in a few minutes’ work after five o’clock? Whatever the reason it is time someone straightened out the muddle. The waste of idle men and trucks should cease. Probably none would welcome some improvement more than the hardpressed railwaymen themselves. — Yours, etc., SHAMBLES. December 4, 1960. IThe District Traffic Manager of Railways (Mr C. J. Millin) replies: “Any move to alter the present system of loading would necessarily reflect on the present service given to the customer and it is not intended to create this position. The question of alternative loading has to my knowledge never been rejected and I would be pleased to discuss with ‘Shambles’ at any time convenient to him the points he has raised.”]
