TWO SHIPS WITH TIMBER
Cargoes From Borneo
And U.S.
Two vessels now at Lyttelton have timber for discharge. The Indo-China Steam Navigation Company’s turbine steamer, Eastern Star, commanded by Captain W. J. Bartlett, has been discharging seraya logs, also known as Pacific mahogany, from Borneo. Seraya is used for making plywood. The 8178-ton Matson Line freighter Sierra, commanded by Captain A. Rathke, has a heavy deck cargo of Douglas fir, from the Pacific coast.
Both vessels are paying their first visit to Lyttelton. The Eastern Star is expected to sail for the Far East, via Wellington and Australian ports, today. The Sierra’s departure is uncertain, due to weather and labour shortage, but she will sail for Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane, when she completes discharge.
