Boxing Jackie Sharpe Dead

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 8.

A former well-known professional light-weight boxer Jackie Sharpe, whose real name was Mr James Alfred Strachan, collapsed and died in Wellington on Tuesday.

Sharpe, who was 46, was born in Australia where he campaigned for Jack Dunleavy, one of Sydney’s best known trainers before the Second World War. He arrived in New Zealand in 1937 for a series of bouts and liked New Zealand so much that he remained here. Sharpe’s most notable bout was against Jack Jarvis for the New Zealand light-weight title in 1940. He was beaten on points and retired from the ring shortly afterwards. Of his 13 fights in New Zealand he won five, lost seven and drew one.
