WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE
N.Z. Contingent To Go By Air

Two hundred and ninety scouts and scout officers will cross the Tasman on December 27 and December 28 in three Electras and a DC6 to attend the world jamboree at Landsdowne near Sydney, from December 29 to January 9. The planes will leave Whenuapai. Rongotai. and Harewood. The contingent will return by air on January 31 and February 1 after spending the latter part of January touring New South Wales. The Assistant Wellington Provincial Commissioner (Mr L. C. Winslade, of Lower Hutt) has been appointed leader of the contingent. His deputies are District Commissioners -L. C. McLauchlan, of Dannevirke. and R. B. Patton, of Buller. The executive officer is Mr lan Hutton, field commissioner at Hamilton.
"All members have been in training camp for three weeks, and I nave been able to see all of them under canvas.” said Mr Winslade. “I am very thrilled with the calibre of .the boys selected, and I know they are going to be fine ambassadors for New Zealand.” There will be 15.000 scouts from all over the world attending the jamboree, most of them coming from the Pacific area. The New Zealand contingent comprises 251 scouts from 14 to 17 years of age and their officers, and is divided into seven units, each of which is named after one of The great canoes of the Maori migration. The centre-piece of the New Zealand display—which will comprise a faithfully-reproduced Maori village—will be a 28ft Maori war canoe from Otorohanga, which was shipped to New South Wales from Wellington last week. Some £3OOO worth of Maori display material has been sent to Sydney for the contingent’s site, which lies almost opposite the main jamboree arena.
