N.Z. LAMB FOR CANADA
Orderly Marketing Welcomed (N.Z. Press Association—Copyrighti OTTAWA, December 8. The Canadian Minister of Agriculture (Mr Alvin Hamilton' welcomed action by the New Zealand Government to regulate shipments of frozen lamb and mutton to Canada and the United States, Canadian Press reported. In a statement yesterday, he said formation of the New Zealand Meat Export Company should bring about a more orderly flow of those meats into Canada! Mr Hamilton said the Canadian Government has expressed grave concern to the New Zealand Government over heavy increases in imports of New Zealand lamb in recent years, especially during periods of the year when Canadian lamb was going on the market. Canadian lamb production was relatively small, he said. It was available only during certain months of the year. Thus, there was a market for imported lamb in other seasons. Trade figures show New Zealand shipments of lamb and mutton to Canada fell sharply last year to 6,250.0001 b from 15.828,0001 b in 1958. Shipments from Australia showed a large increase, to 13.233,0001 b from 4,743,0001 b, Canadian Press said.
