POOR CONDUCT OF U.S. PLAYERS
Davis Cup Team < Criticised (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 7. The United States Davis Cup team in Australia had already won the international competition for poor sportsmanship and bad manners, whatever happened in the cup competition, “Sports Illustrated” said today. The mass-circulation magazine’s report said “ . . . our boys, when annoyed, have been heaving their rackets into the air and the nets, banging balls into the crowds and swearing under their breath loudly enough to be heard around the world.” The article continued: “Barry Mackay, as. might have been expected from past performance, has led • all the rest, but Earl Buchholz has thrown his racket skilfully, Dennis Ralston has proved a dedicated sulker and Chuck McKinley has shown ability to drop-kick either the racket or the ball when he doesn’t agree with an official call.” The magazine said the Americans had examples of champions who exhibited temper tantrums, including Tilden, Lenglen and Gonzales. The magazine said these three were champions, and concluded: “Mackay, Buchholz and the others aren’t good enough to be rude.”
