FINAL ELECTION COUNTS

National Party Wins Another Seat The National Party has increased its election-night strength in Parliament by capturing Palmerston North. The electionnight majority of 88 for the Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund) has been reversed to a majority of 133 for the National candidate (Mr W. H. Brown) on the final figures. When the final figures were announced for 44 of the 80 electorates last evening, the National candidates in the “doubtful” seats of St. Albans and Hastings confirmed their election-night majorities. In Wellington Central, the National candidate also consolidated his victory. Labour held Wanganui, where its candidate had a slender majority of 56 on election-night; and in Lyttelton the sitting Labour member, Mr N. E. Kirk, was returned with his preliminary majority of 371 reduced to 260. The final count has not yet been completed in Manukau, where the sitting National member, Mr F. L. A. Gotz, has a preliminary-count majority of only six. The result is not expected to be known until Friday. Two seats in which National made gains on election night—Gisborne and Rotorua—also await the final count, with the Rotorua result expected tonight, and that for Gisborne tomorrow. In Gisborne, Mrs E. T. Tombleson has a lead of 44 over the sitting Labour member. Mr R. A. Keeling, and in Rotorua, Mr H. R. Lap wood had 271 votes more than the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Boord) on the first count.

Generally, the special votes have favoured National Party candidates, although the pattern has not been followed in the case of some sitting Labour members. The present state of the parties is National 46, Labour 34, a National gain of seven seats, In the last Parliament Labour held 41 seats and National 39. The only upset caused by the final count was in Palmerston North, where the sitting Labour member and Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund), who had an election-night majority of 98, has been defeated by Mr W. H. Brown, the National candidate. The final figures give Mr Brown a majority of 133 St. Albans Win Mr H. J. Walker is confirmed as the new National member in St. Albans. where he .has defeated the sitting member, Mr N. E. Pickering, by 298 votes. On election night, Mr Walker had a majority of 95. Mr D. Maclntyre, the new National member for Hastings, improved his position from 58 to 300 over Mr E. J. Keating, the sitting Labour member. In Wellington Central, where Mr D. J. Riddiford caused a surprise by unseating Mr F. J. Kitts, the Labour Mayor of Wellington and member of Parliament for six years, Mr Riddiford’s election-night majority of 261 was increased to 381 by the special votes. Mr G. A. Spoondr was confirmed as the new Labour member for Wanganui, where the sitting Labour member (Mr J. B. F. Cotterill) did not seek reelection. His first-count majority of 56 was increased to 160. In Miramar, the Minister of Housing (Mr Fox), who had an election-night majority of 478. retained the seat, his majority dropping by 11. In St. Kilda, a marginal seat which did not reflect the swing to National, the sitting Labour member has a final majority of 835, compared with an electionnight figure of 896. Leaders* Majorities The election-night majority of the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) of 2282 in Hutt was reduced to 1989 The Prime Minister-elect (Mr Holyoake) had an increase of 310 in his majority, taking it to 4934. In Marlborough. Mr T. P. Shand has a majority of 1747 (35

behind his 1957 majority) compared with 1399 on election night. The final majority of Mr S. A. Whitehead, the sitting Labour member for Nelson, where the railway issue was paramount, was 1767, compared with 1915 on election night. In the “safe” Christchurch seats, Mr R. M. Macfarlane. Speaker of the House of Representatives and Labour member for Christchurch Central, was the only candidate whose majority dropped from election night. His majority over Mr T. D. Flint (National) dropped from 1951 to 1935. Increases were:—Sydenham. Miss M B. Howard (Labour) from 4525 to 4793: Fendalton. Mr H R. Lake (National). 2262 to 2722: Avon. Mr J.
