FIVE PONDOLAND AREAS CLOSED
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PRETORIA, November 30. The South African Government today closed five Pondoland districts—scene of months of hut burning and murders—to visitors without special permission to enter. Pondoland, in the vast desertlike Transkei, where white men may live only with special permission, is all-African apart from the few white shopkeepers and officials. The Minister of Bantu Administration (Mr Daan de Wet Nel) said in a statement today, efforts so far made to restore peace to the area through existing legislative measures had not had the desired effect, “owing to the nature of leftist activities.”
