ACCENT ON YOUTH

It gives me great pleasure to be standing for the National Party in this particular electorate which established for itself a reputation for independence, initiative and community spirit in the early development of this area. My task as your future representative will be to see that the spirit of progress demonstrated by the early settlers of Sydenham is alive in your midst today and is developed and expanded to the benefit of all in this electorate.

New Zealand is a young country. bursting with possibilities for progressive people. That is why I consider it needs young leadership. able to help economic and social progress. You may say there is little to distinguish each of the main parties from the other; but you will know that what differences there are mean a lot to ordinary individuals like ourselves. Everyone in a free country ought to be encouraged to achieve financial independence, to choose his or her own wav of advancement under the law. and to find happiness through personal satisfactions in job. home, and recreation. We don't want regimentation: we do want a chance, to show initiative and to progress. The Labour Party is dedicated to controls: the National Party believes in freedom for the individual as far as the common welfare permits. That is why I am a National Party candidate. Effect of Taxes You all know of the increase in taxation and prices since the Labour Party a£aip became the Government, These increases have affected- people on’.lSiv incomes worst. ’ What of your -electorate. What has Labour done for Sydenham? Electorates like this haven’t benefited much from the present Government’s grandiose housing programme simply because that programme does not cater for the older properties which abound in this area. The truth is. Sydenham has been almost completely neglected by the Labour Government. Ask any retailer, small or big, what he thinks of Labour’s treatment of him and you. do you believe in being spendthrift or do you want incessant calls on your financial support? Do you want rush legislation, preferential treatment for everyone else but you, empty promises without fulfilment?

The National Party offers you a sober policy of steady progress, tax reductions, concern for all sections of the community, and the firm assurance that it is promising nothing that it will not carry out. If I did not sincerely believe that National is the better party for New Zealand and for Sydenham people. I would not be asking now for the electors’ support.
