WANGANUI, November 21
Goods worth thousands of pounds, including a large quantity of Christmas stock, were destroyed or badly damaged when fire swept through a railways goods shed in Taupo quay. Wanganui this evening.
Inflammable goods in the building spread the fire. Containers of spirits and several gas cylinders were among the large range of articles stored in the shed.
The shed was stacked with Christmas goods, including many toys, tricycles, and bicycles.
When the outbreak occurred, several goods trucks were inside the shed being unloaded. One of the trucks and a waggon containing a consignment of chairs were moved out of the burning shed, but not before the contents were damaged by fire. Packaged goods stacked at the eastern end of the shed escaped serious damage, but much of the stock in the shed suffered either from fire or smoke. No definite estimate of the damage was available tonight, but the chief stationmaster (Mr K Thomas) said it would run to several thousands of pounds.
