RAPE OF GIRL AT MURUPARA
“Savage, Brutal” Crime (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Nov. 19. Described as the perpetrator of a crime of ‘‘plain animal savagery” and “brutish lust,” Tamie Rehu, aged 23, a Whakatane labourer, was gaoled for five years, and his companion, Andrew Takao, aged 16, a bushman, was sentenced to Borstal training (up to three years) on a chargt of raping a 15-year-old girl after a Saturday night dance at Murupara. Saying their crime was one of “cowardly brutality” and an example of mob behaviour, Mr Justice Boys told them that 19 years ago they would have been liable to a flogging. What they had done provided the strongest possible support for those who urged that the reintroduction of corporal punishment was the only type of punishment to apply if crimes of this sort were to be stamped out, his Honour said. Nine others jointly charged with Rehu and Takao have pleaded not guilty and have been committed for trial. Both Rehu and Takao pleaded guilty.,
