CURRENT NOTES
Teaching in Canada—Mrs B. Phillips, a former headmistress of Tuahiwi School, North Canterbury, and more recently of Mangamaunu school, in the Kaikoura area, has taken up a teaching appointment in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, Canada. It is expected that she will return to New Zealand in about two years.
Royal Commonwealth Society Garden Circle.—Mrs M. Hancock, president of the Royal Commonwealth Society Garden Circle, presided at the Christmas party held recently at Elizabeth House. It took the form of a social afternoon. A competition for a decorated Christmas wreath was won by Mrs R. B. Wyles. A flower hat competition was won by Mrs D. Arthur. Mrs Hancock gave the Christmas cake, which she cut. About 20 persons attended. Travel Club.—The chief shearing instructor for the New Zealand Wool Board (Mr Godfrey Bowen) was guest speaker at a meeting of the Canterbury Travel Club. Vocal duets were given by Mesdames Iris Greenway and June Wiliams, accompanied by Mrs R. S. Storie. Mrs H. E. Goggin welcomed the following visitors: Mrs Wilhelmina Beasar (Holland), Mrs J. Wright (Fiji), Miss D. Leighton (Auckland Travel Club), Mrs Harold Murphy (Wellington), Mrs M. McDonald (Christchurch), Mrs C. Shaw thanked the speaker and artists. Christchurch West Old Girls.— Members of the Christchurch West High School Old Girls’ Association held a film and supper party at the Regent Theatre recently. Specially-invited guests included the patron of the association (Mrs C. A. Noble), Miss E. Chambers and Miss H. Maine, a life member. A presentation was made by the president of the association (Mrs B. Ferrand) to Mrs C. A. Noble, wife of the retiring headmaster of the school.
Damage to Floors.—The director of Aigantighe Art Gallery Timaru (Mr C. A. Brunsden) has reported to the Timaru City Council Aigantighe Art Gallery committee that considerable damage is being caused to the gallery floors by the wearing of stiletto heels. It will be recommended at the monthly meeting of the council this evening that a suitable notice be erected at the entrance to the gallery. Cambrian Society.—Coloured slides and tape recordings from their recent visit to the United Kingdom and the Continent were presented to members of the Cambrian Society of Canterbury by Mr and Mrs J. L. Thomas at a recent meeting. Mrs H. Griffiths was welcomed home after a visit to her parents in Wales. Mesdames G. Dorrans and Moorcraft gave vocal items. Elocution items in Welsh were given by Mrs A. R. Ireland. The accompanist was Mr J. G. Parry.
