Concert And Display Of Handwork At Burwood

Many months of hard work on the part of staff and pupils at the Girls’ Training Centre, Burwood, reached a climax on Saturday evenlg, when the centre held its annual concert and display of handwork. The display, which was held in a new block of the school, included embroidery, counted thread work, toys, articles made from clay, and cane weaving. All the articles had been made during the year, the girls choosing the particular type of work which interested them, and often volunteering for evening classes to finish their articles. Of a particularly high standard was the work in the art, section. This included Christinas and birthday cards, calendars, posters, portraits, abstracts, and landscapes. One particularly beautiful picture represented the Crucifixion scene. It depicted three stark crosses, and was finished in great detail. Other religious pictures featured nativity scenes and replicas of the saints. Practical Clothing

Girls who will soon leave the centre had made many articles of clothing which were displayed in the dressmaking section. They had been made with the object of taking them away with them to form the nucleus of a new wardrobe. The clothes were professionally finished, and many dresses, coats, and ensembles were of high-fashion standard. One was a cotton dress in shades of ming blue. It had a plain ming coat lined with the dress material, making it reversable. A group of

lingerie featured lawn half slips trimmed with different coloured ribbons, nightdresses, and brunch coats. One made of cherry and white everglaze cotton had its own matching scuffs. Articles of children’s clothing were also displayed, and knitted garments included baby clothes as well as jumpers. Novelty items included a set of cork table mats featuring painted horses’ heads; a foam rubber handkerchief sachet; lampshades; and Christmas decorations. Aprons, beach and sponge bags, and a plastic shoe bag were some of the other articles. Concert Talent of a different nature was evident in the concert which was given by theogirls after the handcraft display. It was the result of competition in the ballet, tap dancing and singing classes, the winners being chosen to take part in the concert. Items included short sketches, song and dance acts, singing, tap and ballet dancing. The girls were coached for their parts in the concert by the principal of the centre. Mrs K. J. Ford, and the ballet mistress and housemistress. Miss Rene Pedder. The accompanist fdr the evening was the singing master. Mr B. Filer.

After the concert, there was a presentation of shields and cups. The house with the most points for sports, sewing, and singing, was presented with a cup and a picture, and the girl with the most points for the various activities over the year won a silver serviette ring.
