EXHIBITION OF NURSING
Developments Shown [By ZALIA THOMAS] Opening the London Nursing Exhibition recently, the Duchess of Kent suggested that greater use be made of members of the St John Ambulance Brigade and the British Red Cross Society in hospitals, thus releasing the fulltime nurses for more specialised jobs. This exhibition, which was not open to the general public, included daily lectures for nurses and midwives, in addition to displays of nursing equipment, new developments in medicine and many items of common interest to nurses throughout the world. To remove fear of injection and the pain associated with it, the “Hypoguard” has been introduced into Britain from the Continent. This guard, which is easily attached to a hypodermic syringe, completely covers the needle and prevents any possible bending or breaking. Being cylindrical, it also'has the effect of tightening the akin round the area where the needle is to penetrate, and no pain is felt A new “time release” tablet which enables patients to rest for longer periods, has the total drugs divided between the outer layer and the inner core of the tablet, one taking over where the other ends, thus allowing patients six to eight hours of continuous relief. Adjustable Bed A bed nurses would probably like to see installed in all hospitals has been designed by a doctor mainly for the use of paralysed or semi-paralysed patients. Made in three sections, it can be adjusted to almost any position by the patient, simply by the use of push buttons mounted in a switchbox and placed within easy reach on the bedclothes. The nurse is relieved of the burden of constantly moving the patient in order to prevent bed sores. By means of a special attachment, heavy patients can be raised from the bed for toilet purposes.
This bed would also take much of the back-ache out of home nursing, but at lOOgns is probably • little too expensive for most people.
