(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

LONDON, November 19. The South African Rugby Union team maintained its unbeaten record by beating South of Scotland 19-3 at Hawick today. The half-time score was 8-0. The Springboks made ground from the early stages and their giant forwards won most of the scrums. The backs threw the ball about in great style and frequently broke through the Scottish defence. The Scottish full-back, J. H Gray, a last-minute replacement, saved his team from many dangerous situations with quick thinking and clean kicking. It took the Springboks 27 minutes to score. M. J. G. Antelme flashed over for a try, which the half-back, R. J. Lockyear converted. The tourists deserved their lead. They were holding the Scottish side everywhere. Their only real moment of danger came when the Scottish forwards launched a single fierce dribbling drive. It was only a flash in the pan and the centre, G. J. Wentzel, broke away for a wonderful try for the South Africans after some

good handling just before halftime. The Springboks continued their offensive in the second half and came close to scoring in the first few minutes. But two of their big forwards collided on the line and the chance was lost. Defence Held South of Scotland rarely broke nut of its own half but the defence held well against constant Springbok pressure. The pressure told, however, I and a forward, H. S. van der Merwe, crashed through to score. Lockyear mised the kick. Dazzling handling by the Springbok backs cut open the i Scottish defence and the fullback, L. G. : Wilson, dived over I for a try. Wentzel, taking over from Lockyear, converted. i With the game well won, the Springboks opened out more frequently. There was no disputing | their superiority and F. Roux capped a fine handling run with an unconverted try. Just on time, the wing G. D. Stevenson, scored for South of Scotland after, a swerving run through several tackles. The kick missed. I
