Lampada Beats Lawful In Foxbridge Plate

"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, November 20. Weight-for-age honours came Lampada’s way the first time of asking in the Foxbridge Plate at the Waikato Racing Club’s spring meeting at Te Rapa yesterday. The finish of the race was all that had been expected, Lampada wresting the prize only after the grimmest of battles with Lawful.

A neck separated Lampada and Lawful in the finish and their closest pursuer, Gitano, came a trifle more than two lengths further back. There were six others in the race, not one of which had a chance. The Foxbridge Plate is the fifth race Lampada has won this season and the ninth in which he has been successful from 13 other attempts. He has secured six seconds, three thirds and a fourth, so he has been wonderfully consistent. At the same time Lampada has won himself an army of loyal admirers. In the Foxbridge Plate, as in each of his four previous races this season, he was a warm favourite and there was applause from every quarter as his owner, Mr W. S. Macky, returned him to scale. A robust seven year-old gelding by the Italian horse Duccio from Conatus (by Contact), Lampada increased his earnings by his latest success to £7390 Especially on easy footing he has shown himself to be a galloper of the highest class and with the conditions continuing his way he will very likely have another good opportunity in the Waikato Gold Cup on Friday. Lawful ran on pluckily from a most awkward place on the turn into the straight. A furlong from the finish it seemed as though he might last his long run right to the finish, but nearing the end he faded and Lampada then took his measure. The outcome of the race, had Lawful been better favoured in the running, is still being debated. There is no doubt that from the position he occupied with three furlongs to run he faced a very stiff task and his chance was worsened when he had to be taken wide on the last turn. Lampada, on the other hand, with a run through the centre, took a commanding position almost as soon as they straightened up. He was managed cleverly by G. F. Hughes, to whom a fair part of the applause for a fine victory might well have been directed. Lost Two Lengths Yeman stumbled and lost a couple of lengths at the start of the Foxbridge Plate and Relight, Southbridge, Gitano, Marvo and Woodlore ran in close order with a round to traveL Revolver and Lampada were right on their heels, three lengths ahead of Yeman which led Lawful by a length. Near the mile Relight and Gitano were together with Southbridge, Woodlore, Revolver; Marwon and Lampada next, clear of Yeman and Lawful. A little further on Relight eased. Southbridge and Gitano reached the half-mile a length and aquarter clear of Revolver and Relight, which just led Woodlore. There was a length to Yeman and Marwon. Lampada was right on their quarters and Lawful was a length and a-half further back.

Southbridge and Gitano continued in front by a length at the turn into the straight. Woodlore and Revolver came next. Lampada improved fast and so did Lawful on the outside. Coming to the last furlong. Lawful and Lampada were the first two. There was hardly any-

thing between them, but Lampada had a slight advantage, which he kept until the finish.

There was a neck between Lampada and Lawful and Gitano was a moderate third half a length better than Revolver (fourth). Marwon was a length further away fifth. There were six lengths to Yeman and the same margins to Woodlore, Southbridge and Relight. The double, Messalina and Nuncio, paid £26 for £l. The tota iisator on-course handled £92.889 10s, including £12,593 on the doubles. Results: — MATANGI HURDLES Of £600; one mile and threequarters and 55 yards. 12/13 TE MAWHAI (13) 9-0 H. N.
