Livestock Quality Never Higher At Waimate A. And P. Show

Fine weather brought a large attendance to the Waimate Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s 75th annual show held on Saturday.

The livestock on show featured quality never higher in the association’s history, according to competent opinion.

The sheep section—always a strong feature of the Waimate show—attracted an entrv of 320, sheep coming forward from Mid-Canterbury to North Otago, with good competition in most classes. The 82 cattle shown were of a particularly high standard, and fully equal to that of a metropolitan show.

The light horse section featured many of the best hunters in Canterbury and North Otago, and competition was keen. Mrs E. J. Richards gained triple honours with Revelanta, which won the hack and hunter titles and in addition the special award of champion horse of the show.

The pony section was strongly contested, and the president of the association <Mr J. E. Hay) expressed pleasure at the prominence of the youthful competitors. As a result of the Pony Club’s activities, they were exhibiting with near professional status, he said.

In the pony section, the classes for the R. C. and E. R. Harper challenge cup were won in the 12-16 year group by Judith Scott and D. Dunn (equal), and in the 12 years or under by Nina Davison. Miss Janet Trevathan won the A. J. Davey challenge cup for best girl rider 12 to 15 years. Shearing by Godfrey Bowen Demonstrations of shearing by Godfrey Bowen were a centre of interest. A programme of steerriding events concluded the day. The Waimate District Federation of County Women’s Institutes staged a special section of the show featuring home decoration and home industries. The classes for painting and photography maintained their interest. The utility poultry section received rather poor support, but better competition was seen in the classes for farm produce. The Waimate Kennel Club agam staged its championship snow m conjunction with the mam fixture.

The touring exhibits of the Department of Agriculture were displayed after an absence of six years.

The show generally maintained a standard befitting its seventyfifth anniversary, reflecting credit under e °' the association P reside nt (Mr J. E B™orton).
