BANNER CUT TO SHREDS
Removed From Street Corner
An Bft by 3ft canvas banner to advertise the meeting of the Social Credit candidate for St Albans, Mr G. R. Lynne, was torn down from a fence and slashed beyond repair. It was placed on a fence at the corner of Emmett street and Acheson avenue for a meeting held on Wednesday evening. When the banner was to be moved to another site on Friday it could not be foupd. After a search it was discovered in shreds, rolled up in a shop doorway. “It must have been the work of children, as I don’t think adults would do a thing like that, regardless of their party affiliations.” Mr Lynne said yesterday. The banner of Mr H. J. Walker, the National candidate for St. Albans, was taken from the corner of Madras and Purchas streets last week but was found the following day rolled up in a hedge close to Where it had been erected. It was not damaged. An election poster at the St. Albans National Party electorate headquarters at 1029 Colombo street was torn down recently, and a large piece of paper was pasted over the face of the picture of Mr Holyoake on the National Party hoarding in Victoria street.
“I appreciate that during an election campaign some people get a little over-enthusiastic, and I regard these incidents as just one of the almost inevitable minor hazards of campaigning,” said Mr Walker yesterday.
Fall From Car.—Mr P. Carey, of 31 Everest street, suffered head injuries when he fell from a car at the corner of Russlev and Wairakei roads about 12.40 a.m yesterday. He was taken by a St- John ambulance to the Christchurch Hospital. He was treated at the casualty department and sent home.
