CANTERBURY QUALIFIERS

Seven Of 21 Reach Match Play

. (From Our Own Reporter) INVERCARGILL, November 18. Canterbury has 21 players in the national championships at Otatara, and seven of them have qualified for the match play on Monday to decide the amateur championship. They are C. W. Caldwell (Christchurch), R. C. Murray (Russley), I. S. Harvey (Tirnaru), G. P. Vesty (Tirnaru), K. D. Foxton (Russley), E. H. Richards (Russley), and J. R. Broadhurst (Russley). More than that, the Russley club won the O’Rorke Vase, for the best team’s score in the second round of the open, and it is the club’s second such success in three years. The team consisted of the four Russley qualifiers, and there was particular pleasure that Broadhurst, a youngster in his first national, should win a place in the 32. But, in general, it was a disappointing day for Canterbury players. A. C. Browne (Ashburton) but his drive into a tree at the first, and had to play his second at about waist height. The hole cost him seven, and he never recovered. A. W. Robinson (Christchurch) also had a seven at the first when his second failed to find the deep bowl of the green and two attempts to run delicately to the top of the hill for the roll-down failed. After that he played some very good shots to the greens but 'his putter was no ally. B. L. Clegg, in splendid form yesterday, had a wretched time. He missed putt after putt and ultimately it brought about the collapse of his whole game. K. D. Foxton missed three short putts in the first seven holes, but after that was steady and qualified comfortably. E H. Richards hit the ball from the tees and fairways magnificently and he seemed certain to score really well, but he dropped strokes at each of the last four holes. „ . , J. B. Prendergast (Christchurch) also did much better, and needed only three bogeys at the end for a 76, but on each green putts of five feet hit the cup and stayed out.
