Sir, —"Burbank” thinks the British taxpayer is burdened by the cost of aircraft development. Here are a few figures to show him how “pathetic” the situation is.' Since the war £1,007,075,403 worth of products have been exported by the British aircraft industry. From 1958 the annual figure has been more than £l5O million. This represents about £3 a year for every man, woman and child in the United Kingdom. • As for “rescuing the Comet from oblivion,” it is now the favourite and dominant airliner of the European network. Its Rolls-Royce Avon engines have an overhaul life of 2000 hours with no intermediate inspection of internal parts. Can “Burbank” find a power plant to match such reliability and thrifty maintenance?—Yours, etc., HIGH WING LOADING. November 18, 1960.
