Recruiting For Navy
Four boys were interviewed in Christchurch yesterday by the nhval recruiting officer in Christchurch (Chief Petty Officer A. E. F. Gilmour). Three of these were provisionally accepted, one as a seaman boy. one as a writer and one as an engineering mechanic. Chief Petty Officer Gilmour said that he considered the standard of the applicants to be average. Chief Petty Officer Gilmour has just returned to Christchurch from a tour throughout Canterbury and Westland. During the tour he interviewed 24 applicants most of them between the ages of 16 and 17. Eight of these were provisionally accepted. The standard of these applicants he also described as average.
“Several boys who are now just, sitting examinations will probably apply and can go into the next entry period which begins in January." said Chief Petty Officer Gilmour. “We are mainly looking for seamen. radio operators and stewards.”
