WAIKATO FLOOD PROTECTION
£1 Million Programme Approved (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 2. River protection works estimated to cost more than £1 million have been approved by the Government for some of the most vulnerable areas covered by the Waikato Valley Authority. The Minister of Works (Mr Watt) said yesterday that these urgent works were to be carried out at Otorohanga, Huntly, Te Kuiti and Hamilton. “The floods of 1958 emphasised the need for immediate remedial action in these areas,” Mr Watt said. “In some cases tragedy was averted by the narrowest of margins. The present approvals are, of course, only a forerunner to the authority’s £3 million for control of the Waikato and Waipa rivers, which is now under consideration. “Provision is made for substantial monetary contributions by- the Government in subsidies, and b?” the National Roads Board and other Government departments because of special benefits.”
