TRAFFIC PATROL RADIOS
New Equipment Under Construction (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. October 24. New equipment was being built and the present sets were being modified by the department’s technicians to achieve a big improvement in radio communications between district offices and patrols, the automotive engineer of the Transport Department (Mr A. W. Keyes) said today. It would enable closer and more efficient co-ordination and for patrols to call without delay for medical or ambulance aid in case of accident. Mr Keyes said radio was carried by 153 of the department’s patrol cars and there were 16 base stations throughout the Dominion. Because of the low power of the former Army mobile 'medium frequency equipment mainly in use. the daytime range was limited to about 20 ihiles. although the night range was good. The first step was to equip the base stations with modified equipment of four times the present power to give a wider coverage. ' A second step would be to ■ change from medium to very high . frequency equipment.
