Railways Weeds Control
To control weeds on the permanent way the Railways Department was now using a new mixture of chemicals which included dalapon, amitrol and monuron, a representative of a New Zealand chemical manufacturing firm said yesterday, commenting on an article on railway line weed control in ‘The Press” yesterday. Trials had been carried out this year, and from Picton to Waipara and from Rolleston to Arthur’s Pass the lines had been sprayed with the new mixture. The rest of the permanent way had been treated with atlacide. Resulting from the trial the mixture would be used this autumn for all the permanent way, and it was expected that it would give up to a year’s control, compared with the previous twiceyearly spraying.
