Christchurch Team Wins Class For Light Cars

WELLINGTON, October 21. Two women, as driver and codriver, were among the winners in the four classes of the economy run which ended at Wellington today. They are Mrs M. M. Black and Miss J. B. Byres, both of Wanganui. A Christchurch team, G. W. Drayton and W. L. Timlin, won the class for light cars.

The Mayor of Wellington (Mr F. J. Kitts, M.P.), said the trials of which this year’s was the sixth, set a standard of safety which could well be widely emulated. The Minister of Transport (Mr Mathison) said the fact that in such trials there had been only one accident—none at all in this year’s—would give a lead to thousands of motorists in the safety from proper observance of the road code. Ninety-fve per cent, of fatal road accidents were, in his opinion, avoidable. Results of the trial were:

Class A (up to 1200 c.c.): Morris Mini Minor, G. W. Drayton and W. L. Timlin (Christchurch), 57.75 m.p.g., 1; Austin 850. D. W. Archer (Days Bay) and L. J. Reader (Brooklyn), 50.10 m.p.g., 2; Morris Minor 1000. A L. McLean and N. Hansen (Wellington). 46.32 m.p.g., 3.

Class B (1201-1725 c.c.): Peugeot 403, Mrs M. M. Black and Miss J. B. Byres (Wanganui), 37.70 m.p.g., 1; Morris Oxford, A. G. Knowles and K. H. Knowles (Carterton), 36.99 m.p.g., 2; Austin A 55, B. A. Rowse and A. D. Rowse (Mount Roskill), 35.45 m.p.g., 3. Class C (1726-2650 c.c.): Citroen l. A. N. Furze and J. N Rutherford (New Plymouth), 38.05 m. 1; Standard Vangiard, E Skews (Paekakariki) and C. W. Hill (Lyall Bay), 31 m.p.g., 2; Vauxhall Velox, N. F. B. Barry and G. H. The winners in each class received £lOO and a silver tea service, second place-getters, £5O, and third, £25.
