COUP ATTEMPT IN ARGENTINA
Frondizi Refuses To Resign (NfZ. Press Association—Copyright) BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 13. The Argentine President (Dr. Arturo Frondizi), facing an imminent showdown with military leaders, yesterday announced that he would not resign. Dr. Frondizi’! statement was made in a broadcast after a night of tension and confusion, in which troops and sailors were confined to their quarters, officers told to report to their units, and police were mobilised. Yesterday—a national holiday Dor Columbus Day—heavy guards surrounded Government House and President Frondizi’s residence. In his broadcast, the President said: "A minor group wants to stage a coup against the constitutional Government” The President blamed “world oil exporters” for trying to unseat him. He said those same circles had succeeded in deposing President Hiolito Irogoyan in 1930.
