DR. GRIFFITH PUGH, the writer of this article, is an English physiologist, aged 50. He is a member of the Medical Research Council’s Division of Human Physiology at Hampstead. He has taken part in expeditions to the Arctic, the Antarctic, and the Himalayas. He first met Sir Edmund Hillary in 1952 on the British expedition to Mount Cho Oyo, led by Erie Shipton. He was with Hillary again in 1957-58, at Scott Base, in association with the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition.
