Racing CAULFIELD CUP TODAY

JF aipari Clear . Favourite

(NJ!, Fr ta AnociaUmr-CovurigM) MELBOURNE, Oct. 14. The fiery-tempered New Zealand gelding, Waipari, with the big advantage of a stone less than weight-for-age is favourite to win the Caulfield Cup, the first leg of the big Melbourne spring double, at Caulfield tomorrow. Waipari, one of 10 New Zealand-bred horses in the field of 24, is weighted half a stone less than he carried when second in the Metropolitan at Randwick.

His trainer, J. Wickliff, said at the track today that Waipari could not be any better in condition.

All 24 cup acceptors were declared fit and well today and there is little chance that any of the three emergency runners will be called in.

The forecast is for fine weather, with a few local showers. If Waipari wins tomorrow he will be the first horse to carry number 8 saddlecloth to victory in the cup since Flavinius won in 1910.

Flavinius was one of many favourites to win the Caulfield Cup. Since 1945, eight favourites have won the cup, the last being Tulloch in 1957.

Chance Highly Bated Another New Zealand stayer. Sparkler, has finned in the cup betting in the last 24 hours and is now joint second favourite with the Victorian horse. Dhaulagiri. They are quoted at three points longer than Waipari, which is a point less than each-way odds. Athol Mulley, Sparkler's jockey, is very keen on the horse’s chance. He said: "It will take an extra good horse to beat him.*’ Mulley considers Sparkler has improved in condition since he rode him in a splendid gallop last Tuesday. The New Zealand stayer, Ilumquh, favourite for the cup three weeks ago, has eased in the betting. He injured his off-hock in a road fall this week. After Humquh galloped today his trainer. E. Ropiha, said he would be a certain starter. v

numquh had his first gallop at Flemington today since he injured his off-hind leg. He trotted back freely but seemed a little stiff in the injured leg when he had cooled off. Ropiha said, however, that he was confident Bumquh would be fully fit for the cup.

The New Zealand gelding. Olive Branch, was another to have a three-furlong sprint at Flemington today. His joceky, N. Sellwood, described the gallop as most satisfactory, but said he wished he had drawn nearer the rails than No. 19.

Olive Branch has run consistently, except in the Toorak Handicap, when he finished badly. He showed good form in the winter months when he won the Southern.’ Stakes at Caulfield over a' mile, but since then he has failed five times.

Late Arrival The New Zealand horse. Hi Jinx, is a late arrival, and he would have to show his best New Zealand form to have a winning chance tomorrow. The veteran Melbourne jockey, E. Preston, on the outsider, Nether Gold, tomorrow, had his first Caul fled Cup mount in 1933—11 years before tomorrow’s youngest rider. D. MacGregor, was born. Sixteen-year-old MacGregor is riding in a Caulfield Cup for the first time. His. mount is Reinsman.

Preston has ridden in 18 Caulfield Cups. He won on Rivette in 1939.

The Sydney jockey. T. Hill, who rides Waipari, is riding in a Caulfield Cup for the first time. Sellwood has the best record of any cup jockey tomorrow. He has ridden in 13 Caulfield Cups for three wins and two minor placings. His winners were Grey Boots (1950), Basta Felika (1951), and Tulloch (1957). Jack Purtell, who rides Gold Rebel, has ridden in 17 Caulfield Cups tor a win and five placings. The Caulfield Cup has not been lucky tor Bumquh’s jockey, W. Williamson, who has finished second five times. He won on the great New Zealand stayer. Rising Fast, in 1955.

One Thousand Guineas Australia’s best fillies, Lady Sybil and Wenona Giri, meet in the One Thousand Guineas at Caulfield tomorrow. Pre-post bookmakers cannot separate them. They are equal favourites at fractional odds-against The New Zealand-bred Lady Sybil has won at her last five starts. In two of these races, the Moonee Valley Stakes and the Caulfield Guineas, she has beaten the colts. Wenona Giri has won £21,315. Lady Sybil has only won £9350. The only filly which appears to have any chance against Lady Sybil and Wenona Girl is Lady Major, which has won three of her last four starts. The order of favouritism for the Caulfield Cup is:— Waipari. Dhaulagiri, Sparkler. Optic Prince. Travel On. Burnquh.

Gaybao. Gold Rebel. Webster, Olive Branch, Aircraft, Twilight, Glow Mac. Melody Man. Boorala. Teastream. Exaudi. Comte de Paris. Smokey Jane, Orinoco. Dow Street, Well Spent, Hi Jinx. Tengku.
