COMPETITION IN CERAMICS
“Linking Art And Industry” (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 14. A ceramic’s design competition, the third of a series of national design competitions linking art and industiy. in New Zealand, was announced today by the chairman of the Festival of Wellington arts committee, Dr. W. B. Sutch. There will be three sections: coflee set, with three prizes totalling 170gns, and oven ware and drinking mug, each with three prizes totalling 80gns, giving a total prize money of 330gns. “In the past interest in ceramic art and design has been confined largely to studio potters,” said Dr. Suitch. “This competition is an attempt to link these studio designers with the commercial manufacturer and the distributive side of the industry. The aim is to satisfy in design the consumer’s needs for ordinary objects in terms of contemporary New Zealand life and society.” The committee has already announced competitions for carpet design and wallpaper design.
