SPRINT AT HASTINGS
Fountainhead Picked . d . ■ ' £■)■■ ■■ “The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, September 30. The good Ruthless filly, Challen, which is raced by her breeder, Mr J. B. Mitchell, of Kairanga, and trained by F. and G. W. Smith at Takanini, is a firm favourite to win the Hawke’s Bay Guineas at Hastings tomorrow. The only filly to win the classic since it was rejnstituted in 1946 was Passive, which was raced by Mr Mitchell’s father and trained by the same stable. In her earlier attempt at a mile —the Avondale Guineas —Challen was prevented from showing her best by the heavy ground and she finished -well back. On better going she ran on solidly to win the Gold Trail Stakes last week and that effort suggested she would see out the extra furlong providing the going is firm. The T.A.B. double is on the T. H. Lowry Memorial Handicap and the Visitors’ Handicap, a likely combination being Solepic and Fountainhead. The weather has been fine and unless there is heavy rain the track will provide excellent footing. Selections:— 11.15 a.m.—Parkvale Hack Hurdles: Colchis Dinosaur, Alloy. , 11.56 a.m.—Trial .
