CLOUDBURST IN AUCKLAND
3.9 in Of Rain In Two Hours
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 30.
A cloudburst pelted 3.9 inches of rain on to parts of the Auckland metropolitan area between noon and 2 o’clock this afternoon. Properties in the Mount Roskill area were flooded to a depth of more than two feet and pedestrians were sent racing for the shelter of shop verandas as the unexpected storm hit the city.
When the storm was at its height, about 12.45 p.m., thousands of office workers returning to their jobs made a pitiful sight as they huddled together, some soaked to the skin, under the nearest shelter they could find.
A total of 9.19 inches of rain fell in Auckland this month making it the wettest September since records were first kept in 1853. The previous record was 7.84 inches in 1928. The heaviest rainfall for a single day occurred today. There were 20 days of rain and 97.2 hours of sunshine. The average September sunshine is -162.2 hours.
