BOMB PLACED IN FENCE
Explosion Near Church (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. September 30. A home-made bomb which had been placed in a niche in the stone fence at the entrance to the Balmoral Presbyterian Church, in Balmoral. Auckland, exploded with a loud report shortly before 9 o’clock tonight. Pieces of its casing which appeared to have been a slim aluminium tube, were recoveYed in the street. No damage was done to property. Mr S. Slater, who was watching television in his drawing room next to the church, said a cloud of smoke obscured the church. ‘‘l heard a terrific bang and saw an orange-coloured flash out the window,” he said. “By the size of the flash it could easily have killed anyone passing.” The police later recovered a large number of fragments of the bomb.
