Obituary MR C. W. D. BELL

MASTERTON, September 26. Mr Cheviot Wellington Dillon Bell, who died at his home, Rangitumau, Masterton, this morning, was born in Wellington in 1892. He was the younger son of Sir Francis Bell who became the first New Zealandborn Prime Minister. Mr Cheviot Bell was educated at Christ’s College, Christchurch, where he was a member of the first fifteen, and at Trinity College. Cambridge, where he obtained his BA. degree. For some years he practised law with the Wellington firm of Bell, Gully, Mackenzie and Evans. He was a former vice-consul for Spain. Mr Bell served in the 1914-18 war with the 10th Royal Hussars and with the Royal Flying Corps in which he held the rank of captain. In World War 11, he was commandant of the R.N.Z-A.F. school of instruction at Woodbourne. The first Dominion president of the New Zealand’ Founders’ Society. Mr Bell was also a member of the Waitangi Trust Board. He was a former chairman of Wellington division of the National Party before coming to Wairarapa in 1951. He was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1950. He leaves a wife, a son, Michael, of Masterton. and a daughter, Mrs Graeme Whyte, of Wellington.
