SCHOOL BOARDS’ MEMBERSHIP
Mr Tennent Suggests Change
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 21. There was no longer any need for Governor-General’s representatives on high school boards, Mr W B. Tennent (Opposition. Manawatu) said in the House of Representatives today: He suggested replacing GovernorGeneral’s representatives with more parents’ representatives. “There was a good case for Governor-General’s representatives 50 years ago, but not today. There is no chance today of a board getting off the rails, because there is such close contact between the board and the Education Department” Mr Tennent said
He said he bad never heard of a Governor-General's representative reporting to the Minister of Education.
The Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund) said he would consider Mr Tennent’s suggestion “Of course, there arc differing opinions. One man told me he thought there were too many parents’ representative- on boards and they were scared of the headmaster. so always sided with him But I don’t accept that," Mr Skoglund said.
