71 ESCAPE DEATH
Plane Crashes And Burns
(Rec. 11 p.m.) CAIRO, Sept. 4. Only three of the 71 persons aboard were injured, none seriously, when a South African Skymaster airliner crashlanded and burned yesterday in the desert about 200 miles south of Cairo.
A Cairo airport official said passengers leaped to safety from the blazing plane, but lost their luggage and many had their passports destroyed. Of the 64 passengers, 15 were British, 20 South African, and the others German, Belgian, Dutch, Italian, a Swede, and a Dane. The plane, owned by Trek Airways, left Luxembourg on Thursday for a four-day flight to Johannesburg.
Behan “Off The Gargle"
NEW YORK, September 2. The Irish playwright. Brendan Behan, “off the gargle” but carrying five bottles of whisky, arrived in New York today for his first visit to the United States. Mr Behan’s play, “The Hostage,” is due to open on Broadway on September 20, and he has come here to watch rehearsals and attend the opening. Asked if he planned any big drinking sessions of the type for which he became renowned in London and Dublin, Mr Behan said: "No. I don’t want to be a nuisance. I’ll stick to tea, coffee and soda water.”
