N.Z. Basketball Team For Tour Has Young Players
THE New Zealand basketball] x team now in Australia is a mixed side .in many ways, for a number of .the promising players included are comparatively inexperienced. The weakness appears to lie in the defence third, .where much practice will be necessary to keep the ball from the Australian sides. When Australia was in New Zealand in 1948 3 it was noted for its excellent ball handling and the accuracy of. its goalshooters. There is no reason to believe that the Australian girls will be any less skilfUll .now. Brographies - - Brief biographies of the New Zealand team follow: Beryl Ashton, 21, machinist A wing attack who has represented Waikato from 1957 to 1959. Waikato plays in the second grade at the national tourhament. Judy Dunlop, 21, leather Worker. A goal t attacker or shooter, Miss Dunlop has played for Canterbury for the last four years and has represented the South Island for the last two years.

IShe has been in the South Island Iteam at national tournaments for (three years. Mrs Edmonds has jilso been a South Island indoor 'basketball representative. I Margaret Elliott, 19, typist. Miss J! Iliott is a goal-keeper and has represented Hawke’s Bay and the 1 Sorth Island. ] Marion Johnston, 20, shorthand tjlpist. Miss Johnston, who is fin h on the New Zealand women's tennis ladder, is a wing defence anil has represented Wellington in I second grade. tournaments. (I’oUeen McMaster, 17, student. Th|> youngest in the team. Miss Me (Master is a Canterbury representative and was in the South Islsind team at the national tournament last year. A goal-shooter. Mish McMaster is also interested in a thletics and tennis.
Lois Miiir, 25, chemist s assistant A gjral defence, Mrs Muir represented Otago for six years. She has represented Otago at indoor basketball since 1950 and was in the South Island team for
rour years, including last year when she toured Australia with a New Zealand team. Shirley Patrick, 19, homecraft teacher, An Otago representative in 1959, Miss Patrick is a goalkeeper. She is also interested in swimming, tennis, athletics and music. Betty Steffenson, 24, physical education specialist. Mrs Steffenson (vice-captain), a goal attack, has represented Canterbury and Manawatu. She is a former representative badminton, indoor basketball and tennis player. June Waititi, 28, school teacher. Miss Waititi, the captain, is an experienced goal and wing attack. An Auckland representative for six years, she has been in the North Island side for three years. She has represented Auckland at indoor basketba’L Miss D. Cockerton (coach) played for New Zealand in 1948 and is a New Zealand tournament referee and a referees’ practical examiner. The manager of the team is Miss G. Symes, who is president of the Hawke’s Bay association. Miss Symes was for many years a tournament referees’ badge-holder, and a referaes’
