TRENDS OF FASHION
Ideas In London Collections
London’s “Top Eleven” fashion designers, who recently showed their autumn and winter collections, agreed on the universal use of brown. Brown ebony—almost black—was chosen as “the colour of the season,” says a London correspondent. Big, bulky fabric coats lined with fur and enveloped in large fur collars were shown by many. One of Hartnell’s was in black velvet lined with arctic fox. Simply cut suits with collar.less necklines, some with longer jackets and slightly flared skirts, evening dresses with short hemline in front falling into a train at back, day dresses made with the waistline high in front and dropping to the centre back, were seen.
“County” fashions featured longer japkets to suits and Clearly-defined waistlines. Hats were still tall but extremely fluffy in many cases and worn over shorter, flatter hair styles than at present in vogue. Shoes, in spite of protests from all sides about the damage caused by them, are still stiletto-heeled. But Edward Rayne, the Queen’s shoemaker, showed one model with a thicker heel of stacked leather. This style, it is hoped, is an indication of future trends. Gloves shown bore very little trimming and stockings for day time were much darker. Jewellery was large and impressive, with jet predominating. A “gimmick” idea was a white and sapphire blue rhine stone necklace which can also be worn just below the knee with short evening dresses.
