MAN DIES IN FIRE
Blaze In House In Wellington
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 2. A man was burned to death in a fire in a house at 34 Belvedere road, Hataitai, early this morning. He was: Charles Joseph Thomas, aged 53, storeman, who lived alone in the house. The fire brigade received the call at 12.12 a.m. and two engines from the Newtown Fire Station and one from Central rushed to the scene. The rear part of the house containing Mr Thomas’s bedroom and a passageway was well alight. Two firemen, using breathing apparatus, broke their way in and found Mr Thomas lying in the passageway. He was badly burned and had apparently been overcome by fumes. Artificial respiration was applied without success. The brigade’s chief fire officer (Mr H. Bruce) said he believed the fire started through Mr Thomas smoking in bed.
