Transistor Radios
Sir, —I am not in favour of lawbreaking but must confess to a certain measure of sympathy for the luckless Chinese seaman "caught with the.goods” at Lyttelton. It is obvious that transistor radios are in demand here, and I make bold to say that many such devices that are playing merrily away did not come ashore concealed in the clothing of fellowcountrymen of Confucius. Many and varied are the memories and while not taking all of them for gospel, I do seem to have heard it said that there is no smoke without fire. The value of the radios taken from the Asian sailor’s shirt was stated to be £li. Just imagine what two sUch articles would be worth if they were made under the auspices of our benevolent dream-like welfare State.—Yours, etc., W.H.T. August 2, 1960.
