The Budget

Sir,—The attempt of Herbert E. Barnsley to blame the Opposition for the long delay in paying the pension increase is grossly inaccurate and unfair. Since the first announcement in October last the Government has had the time and, as recent events show, also the power to get Parliamentary authority to pay the increase (they are not always so careful to obtain Parliamentary authority before acting), but apparently it was more important to make increases in tariff rates and make the Nelson seat secure than it was to provide a bit of extra comfort for pensioners. The responsibility for the delay should be placed where it belongs, on the Government. I would remind your correspondent that when the Government desired to give away £2l million as a tax rebate to. a section of the people who were in nothing like the difficult circumstances of most pensioners today, they called a special session of Parliament to do so and your correspondent can make his own conclusions as to why the difference. I agree with him and “Far Back Dan” it is very . . .—Yours, COLD WAITING. August 2, 1960.
