CIVIC SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Paparua Council Approval The Paparua County Council feels Christchurch should have a civic symphony orchestra and is prepared to help pay for it to get qn its feet, so long as other local government organisations do the same. Monday’s meeting of the council heard a report on a meeting in July called to consider proposals for local bodies to help financially in the first two years of the orchestra's establishment. The county chairman (Mr J. H. Weaver) and Cr. R. H. Lochhead represented the county at the July meeting. Mr Weaver said they had been told that in the orchestra’s early stages it would be only partly self-supporting and some local body backing would be needed. Paparua’s support, based on urban valuation, would cost the county £72 a year for two years. Both Mr Weaver and Cr. Lochhead said they had been convinced Christchurch needed an orchestra, but wondered whether the county's ratepayers should pay. The council adopted a finance committee recommendation that it would give financial support to the orchestra so long as other metropolitan local bodies fell into line in meeting the suggested allocations.
