ARBOR DAY PLANTING

Ceremony For Schools

Although today is the official Arbor Day in Canterbury, schools will celebrate the day at more convenient times. The main celebration by Christchurch schools will be on Monday when pupils from several city schools will plant trees in Elizabeth Park on the Summit road. The project is sponsored by the Summit Road Scenic Society. It is alpo supported by the City Council. The Mayor (Mr G. Manning) and several councillors are expected to be present. The trees that will be planted in Elizabeth Park have been given by the New Zealand Forest Service from its nurseries at Rangiora. Only a few varieties, mostly of useful character, have !ft>een available, because of lack of space. However, about 11300 trees have been supplied to s|lhe 23 schools in Canterbury that Ire asked for them. The varies include Douglas firs, Lawsonas and deodar cedars. That only 23 schools asked for es from the Forest Service s no indication of the extent to ich Arbor Day was observed by tools, said Mr S. A. La Roche, ef agricultural instructor for s Canterbury Education Board, thought about 60 per cent, of i 300 to 400 schools, under the jrd’s jurisdiction would recoge the day in some form. liffr La Roche said that nine dif/ferent varieties of seed had be6m distributed to 19 schools, and soriiie schools had obtained more ornjfcmental trees, such as flowering [cherries, privately.
