U.S. BASE AT HAREWOOD

Enlargement Plans Plans for enlarging facilities for the United States Antarctic base at Harewood are at present under discussion with the New Zealand Government. Commander F. Kimberling, who gave this information yesterday, said he could give no further details as it depended on finance. % The new commander of the base was welcomed informally when he stepped off a Military Air Transport Service DC6 which landed at Christchurch late yesterday morning after a flight from Hawaii by way of Canton Island and Nandi. Most of the welcoming party consisted of servicemen who had wintered over at the base during the operational off-season. Also on board the DCS were about 50 servicemen. For about 15, the arrival in New Zealand is a new experience, but the remainder have been here before. A Globemaster previously delayed almost 24 hours by engine trouble landed at 1.50 pm. In this aircraft were about 15 passengers and some equipment.
