Films
Sir, —I agree with “Film Fan” about the poor choice of films on view in Christchurch. When are we to see “Smiles of a Summer Night” and other Ingmar Bergman films? Even some British films never get shown here. For instance, “Woman in a Dressing Gown” and “The Man Upstairs,” both praised by critics, were released in England over two years ago and have been shown in other New Zealand cities but have not yet appeared here. Conversely, there seems no difficulty in importing “horror” and Bridget Bardot films, which are usually rubbish. I realise these latter types have wider boxoffice appeal. This was borne upon me a few years ago after seeing that excellent film “Bicycle Thieves.” Said a woman with a heavy sigh: “That was the worst film-I’ve ever seen in my life.” Perhaps cinema managers deserve some sympathy.—Yours, etc., C. GRANT. July 30, 1960.
