HEARING IS ADJOURNED
Arbitration On Puriri Dispute
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 1.
The hearing of the Puriri dispute before Mr H. J. Thomson, S.M., was adjourned this afternoon to allow counsel time to prepare their final submissions for Wednesday morning. The hearing, which at times produced heated exchanges between Mr F. P. Walsh, representing the New Zealand Seamen's Union, and Captain J. W. Dickinson, representing the New Zealand Merchant Service Guild and Captain H. N. Collins, the Puriri’s master, lasted most of the day. The dispute, concerning the refusal of the master to reinstate a seaman, was brought to arbitration at the suggestion of the Minister of Labour (Mr Hackett) after weeks of fruitless negotiations between the guild, the union and the Labour Department.
