Scrub Fire Near Hanmer Forest
A scrub fire near Hanmer State forest which got out of control yesterday was checked by New Zealand Forest Service employees before any damage was done. The fire was lit to burn off scrub in preparation for planting. A sudden wind change caused flames to spread towards the pine forest nearby. Firefighting units from Ashley and Balmoral State forests stood by but were not needed.
