The Congo
Sir, —Ri. B. Thompson is the person with the muddled thinking and lives in a world of 17th century for, to have kept these people ignorant and illiterate is a disgrace and an indictment to any country. There is no such thing as compulsory education in any of these backward countries ruled by whites. Look at India. Now it is just starting to have compulsory education. To keep people ignorant and then turn them loose is asking for chaos and rapine. The same thing goes On in Italy and Spain- If you cannot afford it, you do not go to school. About 80 per cent, of these people are illiterate. That is not democracy. Let R. B. Thompson go to Africa and just see how these poor wretches live. —Yours, etc-, R. DAVIS. July 30, 1960.
