Town Hall Site

—Have our councillors visited and really studied the three proposed sites? I cannot imagine anyone suggesting the two smaller ones when the Limes block is available. I was born and have lived most of my life in the city so can claim to know as much as, or perhaps a little more than, the average citizen. The Limes block was chosen for the town hall by a clever architect and it was approved by Sir Henry Wigram, a former Mayor, who gave the airport to the city. Then a later short-sighted council sold it. Now we want the site back. It is not a personal matter at all but a much bigger one for which all citizens are subscribing. A town hall does not belong to any one section of the community but to everyone. If the Public Works Act can take one >place it can take another. Of course, the owners would be compensated.—Yours, etc., E. R. OVERTON. July 31, 1960. [The Limes block is smaller than the Cambridge terrace site.— Ed., “The Press.”]

Sir, —I am ih complete agreement with the proposal of "Next Hundred Years” to build the town hall in Hagley Park, opposite Park terrace. The park belongs to the people, and the town hall is for the people of our beautiful city. I would regret the loss of playing fields for our young footballers, but perhaps another comer could be found for them. With no impediment in the way, could not the plans be set in progress now with no delay?—Yours, etc., S. P. DOUGALL. July 31, 1960.
