Fencing INTER-SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT
Teams To Compete For N.Z. Title Although only two schools entered for the Canterbury inter-schools* fencing tournament this year, Canterbury will be represented by a strong team which will defend the New Zealand inter-schools* title at Wellington on August 19 and 20. Most of those taking part in the Canterbury tournament were of average standard, but those who had fenced in the national inter-schools' tournament last year showed the value of that experience. B. Mclntyre (Boys* High School), with no losses, fenced with too much speed for his less experienced opponents. and A. Parder (Linwood High School), with a strong defence and good counter-attack, lost only one bout. P. Sharp (Boys’ High School) did not fence with his usual ability until late in the pool, and B. Wheeler (Linwood High School) with only one loss, showed he has fast reaction and good timing and could cause a major upset in Wellington. The girls* team from Linwood High School had to fence junior teams from Linwood and Christchurch Boys’ High School, as no other girls’ schools include fencing on their sports programme. Results were:— Senior.—Christchurch Boys’ High beat Linwood Boys* High. 9-7. Junior.—Christchurch Boys’ High beat Linwood Boys’ High. 11-5. Girls.—Linwood Girls* High beat Christchurch Boys' High juniors. 9-7. The teams selected for the national schools* championships, are:— Boys.—B. Mclntyre (8J1.5.), A. Parder (L.H.S.), B. Wheeler (L.H.S.), P. Sharp (8.H.5.), G. Stokes (8.H.5.), W. Powell (8.H.5.). Girls.—D. Bullivant. M. Grogan, J. Campbell, H. Mcßeth, D. Lloyd.
