Powerful Run Gives Port Wine Success

WANGANUI, July 31. A strong, sustained run from near the rear of the field at the half-mile gained a last-stride victory for the Woodville galloper. Fort Wine, in an exciting finish to the Riddiford Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Rangitikei Hunt Club's meeting at Marton on Saturday. The Wanganui-trained Moomba appeared to have the race well won when he forged to the front inside the last furlong, but Port Wine came with a great burst of speed wide out to beat him by a nose, with Sporting Cap also finishing strongly into third place. In another good finish, in the Norwood Hack Cup, the Wairarapa maiden runner, Putara, which had been consistent in recent starts, won narrowly but decisively over Blue Pacific and the favourite.
